The use of GGBS concrete has recently gained popularity as a resource efficient, durable, cost effective, sustainable option for many types Portland cement concrete (PCC) applications. The current work was carried out to investigate concrete mixes with GGBS substitution based on total cement weight in the range of 15% to 60% by weight. Water to cement ratio was maintained 0.5. Concrete cubes of size 150mmX150mmX150mm and prisms of size 75mmX100mmX500mm were tested for compressive strength and static flexural strength in accordance with ASTM test methods at ages 3, 7 and 28 days respectively. A total number of 60 cubes and 60 prisms were casted for this purpose. High replacement of cement by GGBS in concrete caused reduction in compressive strength and flexural strength. Compressive strength of GGBS concrete increased up to GGBS addition of 30% and slightly lowered the strength than plain concrete after further additions. However, GGBS concrete achieved adequate strength appropriate for structural application even at the 45% cement replacement. GGBS concrete showed substantial gain in compressive and flexural strengths with the age. |
